YouthFriends is a school-based mentoring effort that links caring adult volunteers from the community with students in schools and is open to all students, grades K-12, within participating school districts. All activities take place on school grounds before, during or after school hours. YouthFriends volunteers typically visit a school for one hour each week to do things like have lunch with a student, help with reading or academic tutoring, share an interest or a hobby or simply listen.
Lunch Bunch
Eat lunch in the school cafeteria with an individual student or group of students during their lunch period. Grant County has a variety of businesses that participate twice a month eating lunch with different classrooms. CIS staff facilitates learning activities. During your time together, you may also serve as a mentor by playing a board game, reading a story, playing on the playground or working on a special project. This is a time to build self-confidence and let the student know he/she is important. Time commitment: Approximately 60 minutes weekly for a minimum of eight weeks during the school year.
Lunch Buddy
Make one hour the best hour of your week by eating lunch with a student at a school near your home or work. During this hour together you will serve as a friend and mentor by participating in fun activities on the playground or in the classroom.
Mentor
Have fun getting to know a student through an activities including sharing a hobby, working on an assignment, playing a game or sport, or just” hanging out." Time with a positive adult role model is something kids ask for over and again. A mentor is a friend and a good listener and helps build the self-confidence students need to succeed in school. Time commitment: Approximately 60 minutes per week for at least one semester during the school year.
Math Tutors
Help elementary student improve their math skills by working in their classrooms as math tutors.
A.S.S.I.S.T. After School Program
Involves Hickok Elementary School, Sullivan Elementary School, and Kepley Middle School. The mission of A.S.S.I.S.T. is to provide a safe after school learning environment that promotes the success of our young people. The AfterSchool program is for students needing additional homework help, a safe environment for students of working parents, gifted students, at-risk students, ALL STUDENTS!!! What we do during the Afterschool Program is homework assistance, academics focusing on reading and math, enrichment clubs, recreational activities, community service projects, nutritious snacks, nurture relationships among students, adults, and the community, provide a safe, drug-free environment, and a supervised, positive, learning experience.
Reading Pals/Guest Reader
Once each week, adult volunteers spend time in the elementary schools, reading stories to an enthusiastic classroom of children.
Reading Pals
Provides an opportunity for volunteers to listen to students read in the elementary schools, giving students encouragement and confidence in their reading skills.
Book Buddies
The participants of Book Buddies enjoy not only sharing books, but also the joy of reading. The program connects pre-school students with older partners to start them on the road to reading. |
