YouthFriends is a school-based mentoring effort that links caring adult volunteers from the community with students in schools and is open to all students, grades K-12, within participating school districts. All activities take place on school grounds before, during or after school hours. YouthFriends volunteers typically visit a school for one hour each week to do things like have lunch with a student, help with reading or academic tutoring, share an interest or a hobby or simply listen.
Mentor Buddy
Positive adult role models for children and youth have been tremendously helpful for healthy social, emotional and educational growth. Have fun getting to know a student through a variety of activities which you and your youth determine and may include sharing a hobby, working on an assignment, playing a game or sport, or just "hanging out." A mentor is a friend and a good listener.
Tutor Buddy
Choose your favorite subject: math, reading, writing, science, social studies, computers, music, or a foreign language, and work with a student who needs extra attention in that area.
Career Buddy
Work with older students to aid in understanding and preparing for a specific career. Share employment ideas, and educational options after high school graduation based on the career path you chose.
Bus Greeter Buddy
Meet your student at the bus and help make the day a better one with a friendly smile and walk them to breakfast or class. Or if the whole bus is your idea of fun, greet them all with a high-five and howdy. This is a special time to help a child find meaning for the day and begin the day with a smile.
Breakfast Buddy
Meet an elementary student one-to-one or in a small group and eat breakfast with them. This is a great way to volunteer before beginning your hectic day at work. Share your life skills, assist with homework questions, eat and share conversation. Your breakfast is on the house.
Lunch Buddy
Meet an elementary student one-to-one or in a small group and eat lunch with them. This is a nice way to volunteer and break up the monotony of your work day. Lunch at the school is on the house.
Recess Buddy
Remember those great recess times playing "Duck, Duck, Goose, " or "Mother May I" or just playing on the playground equipment? Relive those times with a child. Teach the games you used to play to a child.
Special Projects Buddy
We actively seek out projects that link positive role models from the community to students. Share your skills and knowledge with a student.
Game Buddy
Are you an expert chess, checkers, or card player? We feel that you can teach wonderful life skills, as well as reading and math skills through these games.
Classroom Buddy
Work in the classroom, assisting all students with assignments or special projects.
U-N-I (You Name It) Buddy
No one knows your strengths, skills and/or abilities like you do. What is the best way you can think of to help kids in school? Let's work together to find a fit.
ACES Buddy
ACES is the current afterschool program and stands for "Adults and Children Experiencing Success." It is going strong, but you could make it better by volunteering your time to spend time afterschool with kids. |
