| YouthFriends is a school-based mentoring effort that links caring adult volunteers from the community with students in schools and is open to all students, grades K-12, within participating school districts. All activities take place on school grounds before, during or after school hours. YouthFriends volunteers typically visit a school for one hour each week to do things like have lunch with a student, help with reading or academic tutoring, share an interest or a hobby or simply listen.

Breakfast or Lunch Buddy
Come and enjoy breakfast or lunch with a student. Enjoy eating and fun conversation.
Reading Pal
Pick out a book to read and share with a student or a group of students.
Academic Tutor
Provide tutoring one-to-one or in a group setting.
Mentor
Help a child develop skills socially and academically to succeed.
Guest Story Reader for Early Childhood
Read stories to pre-school classes to share a love of reading.
Classroom Helper
Work with a classroom teacher by helping students individually, in small groups or even as a class.
YouthFriends Book Club
A book is chosen by staff, students and mentors to read and discuss. A group of students are chosen to read a book with one or two volunteers. A timeline is set to finish the book. This activity includes reading aloud, discussion and relating books to personal experiences.
YouthFriends English Learners Mentor
This program is designed for mentors to work with one or more students whose native language is not English. The goal is to enhance language and writing skills. Volunteers are not required to speak a second language. Specialized one-hour mandatory supplemental training required free of charge.
Walk-n-Talk
Meet with a child at recess to enjoy good conversation while exercising.
After School Tutor
Provide tutoring assistance to one or more students.
Career Role Model
Serve as a mentor and share information about your chosen field to fifth grade students.
Pen Pals
Become pen pals with a student or classroom. This program encourages writing and other forms of communication.
Science Coach
Assist a student in developing and completing a science project.
Special Projects
This includes, but is not limited to field trips, assisting the teacher with holiday activities, etc. If we haven’t listed an activity that appeals to you, let us know. YouthFriends actively encourages the development of new programs. |
