Information for Parents
YouthFriends volunteers are caring adult role models from the community who volunteer with young people in schools, grades K-12. The goal is to help students achieve success, both academically and socially.
YouthFriends volunteers range from college students to senior citizens. All YouthFriends volunteers are carefully screened and attend a two-hour training and orientation session. In addition, all volunteers sign a YouthFriends Standards of Conduct for Volunteers form.
Volunteers meet with students either one-to-one or in small groups for one hour a week—usually for a semester or longer. Activities can include mentoring, tutoring, working on the computer, sharing interests or hobbies or being a lunch buddy. All volunteers meet with students during the regular or extended school day and on school property. These activities do not interfere with students’ schoolwork or daily schedules.
YouthFriends is open to all students in participating school districts. Students may request a YouthFriends volunteer or be recommended by a school staff member or a parent.
