What The Students Said
The StepUp! Student Internship Pilot Program of 2009
 |
"I was able to help bring Science Pioneers into the 21st century by expanding onto social networking. I created a presence on Facebook, updated information on the website and wrote the press release for Meet the Science Mentor Day. The internship is definitely quite an experience. You meet new people and make new connections and it's the connections that you're building that are important to your future."
Qi Chen, Shawnee Mission East High School Marketing and Communications Intern, Science Pioneers

"I have greatly enjoyed my internship this summer! The people there create an exceptionally kind and welcoming atmosphere. The families are very appreciative of what we do and try their best to help in whatever ways they can. I am being taught that every little act in an organization affects the overall product. I got really well rounded experience and I would recommend it to any student."
Krista Poore, Olathe East High School
House Warming Intern, Ronald McDonald House |

"I knew I wanted to do engineering and got into the Aerospace and Engineering program at school. Being a part of that program helped me get the internship and gave me good background information while at Black & Veatch. Many of the engineers have given me college advice and helped me to know what classes will be like. After talking to the engineers, my career goals are solidifiied."
Ally Parfet, Olathe Northwest High School
Engineering Intern, Black & Veatch |

"I worked mainly on projects dealing with building sustainability, meaning buildings that are more efficient and less impacting on the environment. This is a huge movement right now in the world as so many are focusing on the environment and taking care of our planet. It has been good to get in on projects focusing on sustainability because that is where the field is moving and when I graduate from school it will be even more important than it is now."
Sam Lutz, Blue Valley High School
Mechanical Engineer Intern, Black & Veatch |

"I built an inventory and distribution system for LaserCycle. Basically I had to catalogue all the products and find the best way to ship to the clients as quickly as possible. I learned a lot about organization and prioritizing. I also learned that I have a strong work ethic. I recommend doing a student internship with YouthFriends as there's a lot more opportunity and a better chance of succeeding with their program than just going out on your own and trying to get a summer job."
Michael Kelley, Blue Valley North High School
Distribution Intern, LaserCycle |

"This internship has opened a door of so many opportunities for me in just the last month of working here. I have been able to attend a Health Information Technology Conference and learned many new things about what is going on in the health world aside from the patient and doctors visits most of us are familiar with."
Jessica Baber, West Platte High School
Telemedicine Intern, KU Medical Center |
 |
"I loved my internship! It has definitely broadened my idea of what I want to do in life. Occupational Therapy has everything I want to do— deal with kids, which is my main focus, and with older adults too. I really liked the YouthFriends program. I learned a lot from it and everyone was nice and friendly."
Miah Robinson, Lincoln College Prep High School
Health Information Technology & Management Intern, KUMC

"The internship has been very enlightening. I have gained experience in a professional atmostphere, knowledge of environmental efforts and many connections in KC's environmental world."
Jenna Gottschalk, Shawnee Mission West High School

"Thank you to YouthFriends for giving me this opportunity. It gave me a leg up on the competition! I learned a lot to do with computers that they didn't teach us in the two computer classes I took at school last year."
Ja'Lynn Montgomery, Sumner Academy of the Arts & Science
Administrative Assistant Intern, Grant Thornton

"I had an amazing learning experience at KUMC this summer. Working in an office with fellow interns has taught me many job skills that will be helpful in a future job in any career that I choose. Not only did I walk away with refined job skills and solid wok experience, but I also made connections with people who could help me out in many ways in the future."
Jason Hoffman, Blue Valley North High School
School of Nursing Intern, University of Kansas Medical Center |

"My summer job was really fun and sometimes I forget I was even at work! It has been one of the best experiences, and I'm so thankful that YouthFriends has made this opportunity available to people my age. I've had the chance to work with some really great people as well as learn all about non-profit organizations and how they are run on a day-to-day basis."
India Spenner, Park Hill High School
