Students Spread Holiday Cheer with Troops Overseas

YouthFriends at North Kansas City Schools Fox Hill Elementary embraced the holiday spirit in December 2008 by making holiday greeting cards for our troops overseas.

Sam, a YouthFriends Mentor at Fox Hill, brought old Christmas cards, asked students to cut off the fronts of the cards, glue the fronts to folded construction paper and write their own messages inside. The mentor then volunteered to send the cards to U.S. troops.

“She is sending over 50 Christmas cards from our students to our troops,” said Cindy Harkins, counselor and Building Connector at Fox Hill, in December. “The cards were so wonderful, really heartfelt and certainly heart warming.”

The students who worked on the cards believe in the importance of the project.

One student said, “I know if I was a soldier I would be really sad being away from my family during the holiday. I wanted to make them feel a bit better.”

Another student said, “We need to let them know that we are proud of them.”

If you have an idea for a similar activity mentors and mentees can work on together, share your idea through YouthFriends Central.
